A quick guide to choosing silicone

Compare cure types, surfaces and working conditions before choosing a cartridge.

Know the broad categories

Acetoxy silicones are common for general sealing but may not be compatible with every metal or finish. Neutral-cure products are often chosen for more sensitive substrates. Polyurethane windscreen adhesive is a distinct category and should not be substituted with a general silicone sealant.

Check the working conditions

Consider whether the joint is indoors or outside, exposed to water or UV, and likely to move. Check the application-temperature range, bead size and cure schedule on the product label. A stated surface-skin time is not the same as a through-cure time.

Plan for the finish

Silicone sealants are generally not paintable. Remove old material where needed, clean and dry the surfaces, mask edges if a neat line matters, and tool the bead before a skin forms. Use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaner and protective measures.

Read the product data sheet for the exact substrate, conditions and cure—not just the headline use.
